Much has been written about the coolness that is Stranger Things. It is a pop culture lover's dream of all the cool geeky stuff from the Eighties: E.T., Goonies, Aliens, John Carpenter films & soundtracks, Tangerine Dream soundtracks, Star Wars, Dungeons & Dragons, and Snack Pack pudding just to name a few. The concept attracted me back when it was announced - it's a darker vision of the same nostalgic creative vein as Ready.Player.One - and I'm glad I finally got the chance to watch the entire eight episodes of Season One over the past three weeks. Unfortunately, the series is a Netflix show which means you may have to befriend one of the streaming service's almost 50 million subscribers or wait until the DVDs are released.
The show's score of original music - moody, atmospheric Eighties sounding electronic stuff like the aforementioned John Carpenter and Tangerine Dream - more than two hours worth, is spread out across the two albums below and soon to be released on old school physical formats like vinyl and compact disc.
Besides the music score, more than three dozen songs from the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties are scattered throughout the eight episodes, both in the background and the foreground. Nora Felder and her team at Picture Music Company have really done a fantastic job choosing and clearing songs for Stranger Things, giving us some familiar tunes along with some undiscovered ones. I've rounded up 24 of my favorite songs heard on the show in the playlist below.
Terri and I just finished watching it this weekend. Great set up. Season one finale seemed a bit too "rushed". Looking forward to season two.
